The Estate

Tactile red Silves sandstone dominates Quinta dos Sentidos’ architecture, the sweet aroma of wild thyme infuses the air, exotic flowers and fruits delight the eye and the chirping of crickets fills the ear. And under our feet, the red soil barely covering the limestone is perfect for growing high quality grapes.

The Location

Quinta dos Sentidos is situated in the rolling hills of the most southerly province of Portugal, the Algarve.

There, orange groves provide an exotic and fragrant backdrop to everyday working life at the estate.

Just a 45-minute drive from Faro Airport and 10 km from the ocean.

The Philosophy

It was Algarve’s nature that first attracted us to the region, and it is the same nature we strive to respect at Quinta dos Sentidos.

We truly love our plot of land, and we do our best to cultivate it in harmony with nature. To this goal we practice an integrated eco-sustainable approach to farming with biodiversity as a key element.

By allowing nature to take the lead, we make wines that not only taste good, but carry with them the sense of their origin, their terroir.

As part of this concept of balance, we have left a large area of the estate completely untouched. Those 1.5 ha of untamed nature are brimming with wildlife and insects, including six bee populations totalling almost half a million bees.

Other than vines and olive trees, we have planted more than 300 other species, including 110 fruit bearing plants with origins ranging from temperate to tropical climate zones. About 40 of these are different citrus plants.

The estate also features an aquatic ecosystem – a bio-lake which is home to countless plants, frogs and other creatures, attracting birds, big and small.

The environment-conscious philosophy continues in the vineyards, olive groves and fruit orchards. There we practice minimum intervention disease control and green fertilization by allowing insect-friendly, flowering weeds to grow between the rows of vines. Additionally, in winter we fertilize with compost from our purpose-built compost site, made throughout the year from the pomace of the wine and olive oil production as well as the green cuttings from the land, allowing for a cyclical process through growth and production back to nature.

And there’s more. Storing Quinta dos Sentidos wines in naturally insulated underground wine cellars, running the Quinta on solar energy, packaging goods in boxes not requiring tape and sealing our bottles with certified Portuguese cork – we care for the environment every step of the way.
